Strong Willed

I have a strong willed student. You might be thinking of a few people that would fit that category. I was thinking about how discouraging it is when this student chooses not to work, falls behind, and refuses to ask for help. I’ve tried many different things to try and get this student to engage and enjoy learning. One thing I have learned is that I need to continually find things that this student does well. I need to say uplifting words and choose not to complain about all of the wrong things this student is doing. It is a challenge not to complain. But what I have learned is that if I only focus on what is driving me crazy, that is all I think about. Yet, if I am actively looking for something, anything, that is done well I am surprised at the good things I find.

The way he beats and flicks those fingers around is just intense.

A whole new world

I've been doing research on hand drums for the last month or so. I narrowed it down to either a djembe or a doumbek. I ended up getting a doumbek (Toca Synergy Freestyle-bali red). I am being introduced to a whole new world here! I found this man named Jamal Mohamed. Check out this video. Jamal is in the middle. Spoonman is on the left. And John Bryant is on the right.

Birthday Cake!

While planning the September birthdays (there are three of us born in September) with my mom we came into a problem. She and my oldest sister would be out of town on Friday and Saturday. So, I volunteered to make the cake. As we talked I heard my mom say, "... chocolate cake ..." She was assuming it would be a chocolate cake. As a child I didn't know people had anything other than chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and chocolate ice cream on their birthday.

I reminded my mom that I volunteered to make that cake, and after all since it was my birthday we were celebrating, I would be decide what kind of a cake. In gest I told her that it just might be purple. Well, that didn't please my chocolate loving mother. She then said that she'd find a way to make the cake. I told her no, that I was quite capable of making a cake. I then reminded her that again, it might be purple.

Enjoy some pictures of the cake I made.

Happy Birthday Tasha!

I bought Tasha a keyboard for her birthday. This project was almost 3 months in the making. During the last week prior to the big day, I gave her a new clue each day.

1. Your gift can fit in the closet. Don’t go in there.

2. Four parts make the whole. In the closest are two and two are hidden elsewhere.

3. Your gift has inspired many.

4. You can enjoy this gift sitting or standing.

5. Some assembly is required.

6. Coordination will be important.

7. Four boxes of different size and shape await your curious eyes...

Clue 7 lead her into the office where I had wrapped each empty box. She had to theorize based on their size and shape as to what her gift could be.

Clue 8 was the collage which is shown below.

She played "Elise" right off the bat in a mode that shows you which key to touch and waits until you touch it. She scored a good job. Then after we came back from dinner she scored an excellent job! Perhaps in few weeks we'll post her debut video.

Binder Art

Even Smilies have personalities.

Hebrew

I am learning Hebrew this semester. I am having great fun. It is challenging.
My given name Kyle is not found in the TNK so I was given the name Levi.

I went out and purchased a Tanak; this is a phonetic writing of TNK. TNK is an acronym for Torah (Teaching), Nevi'im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings).
